Position: Commissioner, Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service


Don Maki is a Commissioner with Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service since 2000 and serves the labor/management community in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Don provides mediation services to the industrial relations community and mediates disputes in both the private and public sector.  Don’s work also involves mediating cases for the United States Equal Opportunity Commission, Civil Rights, Interior Department, Federal Prisons, U.S. Postal Service, and a number of other federal agencies.  

Don has and continues to present at national and regional conferences on labor relations issues which also include improving communication and conflict related topics.  Don was also selected by his agency to conduct training internationally through the International Labor Organization in the countries of Myanmar and Bangladesh.  His work Includes conducting specialized workshops and programs aimed at improving labor-management relationships, organizational effectiveness, and alternate dispute resolution processes.

Currently, Don is also an advisor to the Northeast Wisconsin Construction Industry Partnership and the Upper Peninsula Labor/Management Council.

Prior to joining FMCS, Don served as a union staff representative for twelve years in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Detroit, Flint and Dayton, Ohio.  While working as a staff representative, he also served a term as president of the Professional Representatives Organization.  In addition to his labor-management experience, Don completed a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, with a minor in business management at Northern Michigan University, where he also did his graduate work in public administration.
